Poza Rica’s Roots & Economic Activity
Poza Rica was born in 1932, as a result of an English oil company’s settlement: “El Aguila”. It flourished and developed what it is now considered the most important means of living for the entire region: Pemex. The head office of Sub-Director of Pemex Exploración y Producción Región Norte is located here. Nevertheless, Poza Rica is an example of opportunities for business in many areas: agricultural industries, service and finance, cattle businesses, etc., which are in constant development.
Because of its geographic location, it receives the economic activity of the nearest towns: Papantla, Alamo, Cazones, Tihuatlán, etc.

You can find one of the most important archaeological sites in the Americas: “El Tajín” driving 15 minutes from Poza Rica. It attracts visitors from all around the globe because of its size and unique attributes which include very distinctive styles of art and architecture.
The most outstanding of its structures is called The Pyramid of the Niches, with 360 niches all around and very well defined cornices.
El Tajin was a major religious and commercial center of the era. It flourished throughout 300-900 AD, and there, the famous rituals of the ball game were practiced. El Tajín has one of the largest ball courts in Mesoamerica.
There is a small but well put museum at the site, and you can admire the Voladores de Papantla ritual every day at noon: the ritual begins with a dance to drum and flute music dedicated to the four cardinal directions at the base of the pole, then the group of five dancers climbs to the top of the pole. With continuos music, four of the dancers descend hanging from a rope tied to a squered shape structure on top of it. It is worth seeing.
Totonaca Indian represented in a spectacular sculpture by a local master: Teodoro Cano.
